Event Details

The Riot Show is an interdisciplinary exhibition that explores the causes and contributing factors to so-called race riots in the United States. The show includes visual art created by Michael Faris and poetry created by Unique Hughley. This exhibit follows the visual record of police brutality that unfolded during the Civil Rights Demonstrations during the 1950s and 1960s and the events following the police shooting of Michael Brown in 2014 in Ferguson, Missouri.

This exhibit illustrates the ideology and methods that law enforcement officials utilize to prevent people from holding demonstrations against police violence. The poetry and visual works chronicle major historical events in the Civil Rights Movement such as examples of police brutality and the arrest of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Birmingham. The Riot Show then compares contemporary events related to civil rights, such as the long series of police shootings of Black men and the ensuing demonstrations in Ferguson, Missouri which impacted events and outcomes in cities all over the United States.

In addition, The Riot Show is associated with Critical Enlightenment Theory, a component of Critical Race Theory that asserts that there are perceptible strategies and tactics used by a hegemonic group to maintain the oppression of other groups.

This show contains twenty visual artworks and eleven poems, all relating to the themes of riots.
