A night to experience art in its diverse and dynamic artistry. East St. Louis native, Alicia Sunshine of Beyond Measure, LLC, members of Afroetics and dynamic local artist who have had an amazing impact on the St. Clair, Metropolitan & international Communities. This production is in support of Alicia Sunshine embarking on a journey to study & visit Mother Africa.

“The Soul of a Woman” is a show that deals with the complexities of womanhood. Defining womanhood should be easy. However, a prominent issue in the characterization of womanhood is its limitation to a sex system drenched in patriarchal language and selective principles, prescribed mainly by those who are not women. From there, we get stereotypes.

Womanhood encompasses biological sex. Yet that is a small component of womanhood’s full essence — a mighty, agile cultivator and giver of life. Contextually, the descriptive list is enormous, but Misconceptions arise when there is a lack of lineage tying back to the soul.

In order to get to the “Soul of a Woman” one must begin with knowing, “Women are so much more than the sum of our parts . . . Womanhood, in the end, is simply what an individual woman chooses to do with such stereotypes and her life. The next time you hear someone try to insult a man by referring to him as a woman (or “womanly”) consider that it may be the greatest compliment one can give.”
